Will 2023 Be the Year We See AI Live Up to Its Full Potential?

Artificial intelligence has become a significant part of our daily lives. But what about its effects on the legal sector? Will AI continue to expand its reach in 2023; and are we prepared for it?

It is undeniable that we live in a society where Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and methods are frequently applied in our day-to-day activities. AI is deeply ingrained in our daily lives, from using virtual maps and booking cabs to auto-complete/-correct features on our phones and search engines and even our social media algorithms. But what about its effects on businesses, particularly those in the legal sector, which is being swept up by technological advancements? What form will justice take when AI causes profound changes in the way that law is applied in the future? Only time will tell. So, for now, here are our top 3 predictions for 2023.

#1 AI will be crucial to the networked ecosystems of the future

Experts have predicted that in 2023, AI will be ‘at the core of connected ecosystems’, effectively influencing searching and learning systems from within – systems that will work to produce continually improved outcomes. We already have ChatGPT – Open AI’s generative language model that has revolutionised research and, to some extent, writing. Rumours are that the next generation model is already in the works. If the recent commotion surrounding ChatGPT has been extreme, then GPT-4 promises to take things up several notches. And that could be all but a mere aspect of the networked ecosystem predicted. So, buckle up!

#2 Cybersecurity will see dramatic transformation

AI’s unique powers serve a much larger purpose in cybersecurity. AI can analyse and mitigate vast volumes of potentially harmful data without the need for human intervention while also making recommendations for potential dangers. Experts forecast that security practitioners and the industry as a whole will have much better tools and much faster information at their disposal in the upcoming year as the developments surrounding AI application are only expected to intensify. As a result, they should be able to isolate security risks with much greater precision. Additionally, more marketing-like strategies will be at their disposal helping them better understand odd behaviour and unfavourable actions.

#3 Courts will up the ante

2022 was the year we saw courts finally dive deep into the justice tech boom. In the past year, not only have we witnessed an increase in the rate of courts’ tech usage, but also their ventures in AI-based applications. AI is being used by court systems all around the world to analyse vast volumes of legal data to assist administrators in expediting judicial procedures, help lawyers in identifying precedents, and provide judges with predictions on matters like sentence duration and recidivism rates. In India, the Supreme Court even introduced its first AI-based research platform for judges. With advancements in AI-based speech recognition, real-time language translation and search capability, we cannot be surprised if in 2023 we come face to face with an evolved justice system with judiciary capabilities only imagined in sci-fi!

Of course, we will have to wait and see how things pan out; but if expert predictions are anything to go by, then we are looking at a year where we see AI really come into it on its own. When it will continue to expand its reach and even exploit our dependency on it. The question we need to answer right now is: are we prepared for it?
